I had played the tuba in my first year in the Clinton High School Jazz band, and although it was fine for the jazzier tunes it sounded a little goofy for the more pop tunes. That summer I got my first guitar, a Peavey bass, with a tiny amp from L&S Music in Conway, AR.
I'm not sure why the CHS Jazz Band was invited to play at Wal-Mart on Saturday, October 8, 1988, but I wrote the date on the tape. I wanted to record the show so I could have something to practice to. I don't think the group had even practiced yet for the school year, so it was my first time to play most of these songs and first time on bass. The songs themselves are a slow and melancholy mix ("Feelings"), though things pick up slightly for Billy Joel's "My Life", a song I had never heard. I had no idea what was happening in that song and completely stop in the middle section. There was a PA and I remember we played very close together not far from the entrance most likely in our acid washed pants and gelled/permed hair. There were probably ten or so parents and random citizens standing around. Mr. Goza's in between song banter is great here and continues at the end of each track.
The last five songs are a poppier and looser set, most likely from that year's spring concert performed months later for the student body at the CHS gymnasium.
